Why Don’t You Carry Beds With Wrapped Coils?

There are many mattress makers who construct their beds from these thin-wire coils that are compressed slightly, and wrapped inside of some woven or non-woven fabric.  The resulting pieces are then “glued” together to form the innerspring.

In our experience – these beds are prone to a number of different problems that make them an unsatisfactory risk for all but the very smallest of customers.

These risks include “ponding” which describes a soft coil that actually sinks below the harder edge support under normal use.  The result is a hammock-like effect that can cause pressure to any area rubbing against the higher, harder edge.

Another issue with this construction is that the coils often become entangled with one another under normal use.  The coils not bearing weight will often get “caught” on the adjoining coils that are depressed with normal use.  They don’t always untangle when you get up.  Even worse – when you roll across the surface – you can actually bend the soft higher-sitting coils sideways, and they won’t respond back into normal shape.

Many models with this construction claim to be “firm”.  In our view – nothing could be further from the truth.  Tricking customers by placing hard padding over butter-soft coils and calling it “firm” is not our idea of customer care or telling the truth.  Please don’t fall for it!

The bottom line is that return rates and general customer dissatisfaction over durability issues make this a non-starter for Famous Mattress.

You might not remember which maker constructed your bed after 5 years, but you’ll sure remember who sold it to you.

At Famous Mattress we take a long-term view as far as building successful long-term relationships with our customers and we won’t sell out for this high margin, but failure prone product.
