Why Your Partner Doesn’t Agree You Need A New Bed I heard one of our people joking that he wished he’d had a dollar every time a couple came into his store, and the bigger of the two people said, “I don’t see what’s wrong with our current bed…” It happens regularly in Famous Mattress stores, and more often in the privacy of people’s homes before they make the decision to go out shopping for a new mattress or set. It usually doesn’t have anything to do with being “cheap”, or trying to divert the necessary funds for another purpose (which is also something we hear often). It’s just that people’s perceptions differ based on many factors, like their size, shape, physical health, sleep patterns, etc.
The underlying cause for this kind of a statement is that picking a bed is often counter-intuitive to most people’s way of thinking. Often people think that the larger person should give the primary input in selecting the new bed because of the impact they make due to their size, when it is far more often the case that the smaller of the two will actually be much more sensitive to the bed. Depending on the kind of materials used in the bed, it is often the case that a larger person (relative to their partner’s size) will compress a mattress to a point, that any number of different configurations will work almost equally as well as one another. We often hear customers (particularly the larger partner) say that “…all of these feel the same…” This is not the case for smaller people, or with many women (regardless of their size) – even in the absence of physical injuries or long-term health issues. Most men carry their weight relatively evenly between the neck and the knee. Women on the other hand, tend to carry more through the hips and shoulder area, with a bigger differential between the waist and the hip. This makes it crucial that most women have a firm inside support, and comfort layers that contour to fill the gap between the waist and the hip while sleeping on the side. In addition, a good rule of thumb is that while lying flat on your back, that you have no gap between the comfort layers and the small of the back. If there is a gap it means that the bed is not contouring properly and that the surface is too hard for your particular size and/or shape. There is a lot more that goes into picking a good mattress, and the people at Famous Mattress are trained to help you when you come by. We just don’t want you to start off on the wrong foot by calling your partner “cheap” before you get here!
