Why don’t you carry airbeds at Famous Mattress?

Despite a lot of national marketing targeted at getting potential customers interested in making the change to an air bed; we have been resistant to getting into this niche for several reasons.

Reason #1:  We hate dealing with industry people who don’t tell the truth

We have seen nothing more fake than the way these people try and scare consumers away from more conventional bedding by using distortions and even what we see as  outright lies.  They know that the number one reason for dissatisfaction with a new mattress is because it is too hard, so they drive it home that it’s the fault of the coils inside.  This is false!

Firmness lasts if that firmness is coming from a legitimate double-tempered coil unit and not those thinner non-tempered or glued-together coils or plastic air bladders.  They often place hard padding layers over the top of their non-supportive core to give you the illusion of firmness.  Don’t fall for it.

Surface comfort can and should be achieved with padding materials on top of a solid weight-bearing core to prevent you from sleeping in a hammock shape.  Remember that firmness comes from within and that it’s ok to be comfortable and you’re well on your way to making a smart purchase.

The alternative is to buy-in to this nonsense of non-supportive cores, and it’ll have you in traction a couple of years down the road when that hammock shape ruins your back, shoulders and hips.  They can’t fix back problems quickly because they’re caused over time and nonsense like this is a big culprit.

The other thing they often engage in is what we see as completely bogus pressure-mapping.  If anyone tries to sell you a mattress based on this borderline-fraudulent practice; we encourage you to go elsewhere.  They will typically ask you where the pressure is and then make the machine show that, and they’ll tell you it’s because of the inside instead of the surface which is a lot closer to the truth in almost every case.

Reason #2:  We’ve never seen one that provides what we see as correct support

I’m sure their celebrity spokespeople have swallowed the Kool-Aid and believe what they’re telling you at 2 am, but we’re here to tell you different.

Do you weigh more between your neck and knee, or at your head and foot?  If you have much more pressure in the middle of the air bladder then wouldn’t that bulge the areas with less weight when that air is displaced?

Wouldn’t that mean that I’m either placing no weight down that far through the padding layers (which means basically that you’d be getting zero support from the core), or that I’m depressing the middle and bulging the outside so that I’m laying in a hammock?

Either way it doesn’t fit with a common-sense definition of correct support in our view, and we won’t sell it until someone can make one that provides deep down correct support.

Reason #3:  They’re grossly overpriced

Paying thousands for a glorified camping bed?  Are they serious?
